The Soviet Memorial in Dresden was created by the sculptor Otto Rost in 1945 and inaugurated on 25 November of the same year;
It was the first monument of its kind on German soil after the Second World War. Originally erected on Albertplatz, it was moved to Olbrichtplatz near the Military History Museum in 1994.
The memorial consists of an obelisk made of red Meissen granite, crowned by a bronze group of two Soviet soldiers with a flag and weapons. Bronze plaques on the plinth show scenes of battle and reconstruction. A Russian inscription honours the fallen soldiers of the Red Army.
From September 2024, the memorial will be renovated, with the sculptures and plaques being restored. The Advisory Board for Cultures of Remembrance is also planning a critical commentary on the memorial and its history.
