Memorial wall Slaughterhouse-Five

At a glance

Memory in the slaughterhouse: the memorial wall for Kurt Vonnegut's 'Slaughterhouse-Five'

The "Slaughterhouse-Five" memorial wall is located in the basement of Messe Dresden, the former Slaughterhouse 5, where the American writer Kurt Vonnegut survived the bombing of Dresden in February 1945 as a prisoner of war. He wrote about his experiences in his novel "Slaughterhouse 5 or The Children's Crusade". The memorial wall designed by Ruairí O'Brien consists of 135 backlit boxes that combine a map of Dresden from 1945 with original photographs of the destroyed city. Quotes from Vonnegut's work are also integrated. The installation is intended to keep the memory of the prisoners of war at Slaughterhouse 5 alive. Due to ongoing trade fair operations, the memorial wall is not open to the public, but can be viewed as part of the guided tour "On the trail of Kurt Vonnegut - Slaughterhouse No. 5 Tour".

Visiting the memorial wall:

The memorial wall is not open to the public due to ongoing operations at MESSE DRESDEN. However, those interested can visit the memorial wall as part of the guided tour "In the footsteps of Kurt Vonnegut - Slaughterhouse No. 5 Tour".
