They are nice to look at but very laborious to maintain: The terraces supported by natural stone walls where wine is grown along the Saxon Wine Route. In one of the most northern wine growing regions in the world it takes special measures to make sure that the vines thrive and yield profit. They are mainly located on the southern slopes along the Elbe river where the microclimate is milder than in the surroundings. For more than 850 years, vines have been cultivated in Saxony. A fact that has influenced the landscape to a great extent. What humans created has incorporated itself harmonically into nature. The Saxon Wine Route stretches from Pirna, south of Dresden, through the Saxon capital itself to Meissen, and from there on to Diesbar-Seusslitz. During September, wine festivals are celebrated in Meissen and Radebeul. Schloss Wackerbarth Castle in Radebeul and Prince zur Lippe, who has his castle in Proschwitz and his vineyard estate in Zadel, rank among the most prominent manufacturers. The vineyards provide wonderful views that can be combined when travelling along the Saxon Wine Hiking Route.
