Albrechtsburg Palace

At a glance

Anchor point no. 13 of the Via Romantika (Castles and Palaces) and Attraction no. 13 of Via Romantika cultura

Without the romantic spirit of the 19th century there wouldn’t have been any salvation: When the porcelain manufacture left its first production site in 1863, Germany’s oldest palace had suffered massive damage. Thanks to the transfiguration of the Middle Ages Albrechtsburg Palace was refurbished immediately and extensively until its late Gothic appearance was restored. Afterwards, the rooms of the two main floors were adorned with superb mural paintings on Saxony’s history that fascinate visitors until this day. The exhibitions on the palace history have been designed in a way so as to not disturb the spatial effects. During the building phase the master builder Arnold von Westfalen developed new architectural forms that had great influence on the region and beyond. Still during the construction phase the ruling brothers Ernest and Albert divided Saxony up so that the palace that was eventually named “Albrechtsburg” didn’t become the Saxon residence as planned. Together with the other buildings on the castle hill, among them the cathedral, Albrechtsburg Palace forms an ensemble of utmost beauty and elegance. From the castle hill you have a marvellous view of the historic town and the surroundings.
