Theater Meißen

At a glance

In the middle of the old town of Meissen, the time-honored Gewandhandhaus houses the Meissen Theater, which is one of the most important cultural institutions in the porcelain and wine city.

The Theater von Meißen is one of the oldest municipal cultural institutions in Meißen. The love and passion for theater led to the installation and opening of the theater in the historic Gewandhaus at the foot of the Burgberg in 1851 and ensured that in more than 160 years of theater history, despite ups and downs, the theater tradition in Meißen has always been preserved. After the flood disaster in 2002, the building was completely renovated. However, the charm from past times can still be felt in the auditorium and stage area. The theater inspires with a mix of different performances: Guest performances by the Landesbühnen or the Mittelsächsisches Theater, performances by the Dresden Academy of Music, concerts, ballet, plays for children and young people and much more ensure a varied entertainment program for young and old. Theater lovers who want to enjoy theater from more than just their seats are invited to join the various theater groups such as the Senior Theater or the Children's Theater.

The verweilBAR and the TheaterCafé Käte in the theater are open one hour before the performance starts.
