The equestrian statue of August the Strong (Saxon Elector and Polish King), cast in copper, has stood at Neustadt Market since 1736. The monument is gilded and shows August the Strong in Roman armour riding east towards his kingdom of Poland. He and his son Friedrich August II built the magnificent Baroque buildings and unique art collections that earned the Elbe metropolis the nickname "Florence on the Elbe". The Golden Rider can be reached from the Schlossplatz via the Augustus Bridge.
