The Caspar David Friedrich Monument in Dresden's Brühl Garden honours one of the most important German painters of the 19th century.

It was designed in 1990 by the artist Wolf-Eike Kuntsche and consists of a window, an easel and a commemorative plaque connected by poles. In the centre of the unusual structure is a chair.

The inscription on the plaque reads:
"The painter should not only paint what he sees in front of him
but also what he sees in himself.
So if he sees nothing in himself, he should also refrain from painting
what he sees in front of him. C.D.F."

Linger near the monument and enjoy the inspiring atmosphere that may also have accompanied Caspar David Friedrich in his work. The monument is not only a reminder of the artist himself, but also a recognition of his importance for German art history.
