He had architects from the Saxon court build a placid retreat with a small castle and French garden: In 1727, the highly decorated field marshal Christoph August von Wackerbarth, a cabinet minister of elector Augustus the Strong, purchased some vineyards and the subjacent green areas in today’s Radebeul. But the peace and quiet he sought didn’t last long because the elector took pleasure in the new estate and would invite himself over frequently. Until today the Saxon State Winery of Schloss Wackerbarth Castle offers delight for all the senses. The baroque splendour forms the backdrop for many events and countless couples have tied the knot at the Belvedere. Of course, wine is also produced here. As well as sparkling wine according to the Méthode champenoise. After all, it is the second oldest champagne cellar in Germany. Wine and sparkling wine tours take place everyday. The production processes of the transparent manufacture are beautifully illustrated to the visitors while they, most probably, anxiously await the tasting. Tastings can also take place at the restaurant and on the baroque terraces or even at the shop that not only sells the proprietary products but also chosen products by other Saxon vintners.
