The Coin Cabinet

At a glance

Das Münzkabinett in Dresden ist eine Sammlung historischer Münzen,Banknoten,Medaillen,Wertpapiere,Orden,Ehrenzeichen,Petschaften,Prägestempel und Siegelabdrücke.

Since the first silver was mined in the Ore Mountains in the 12th century, Saxony has played an important role among European minters - the mining and thus mining rights were held by the Dresden Electors. The Annaberg Altar from the 16th century shows the path from ore to coin. A floor-to-ceiling reproduction opens the Dresden Coin Cabinet. With about 300000 individual pieces, including many medals, it is one of the most important in the world. When you visit the modern presentation, you will also learn what the dollar has to do with Saxon coinage.
