The Strehla mermaid is a 3 meter high mermaid figure, which is placed at the legendary Nixstein on the banks of the Elbe in Strehla.
The small medieval town of Strehla in the district of Meißen is characterized by a pronounced mermaid cult, which goes back to a mermaid myth associated with the town. The center of the legend is the so-called Nixstein, which stands on a dead Elbarm in Strehla. This is the remains of a large granite rock, which is said to have served as a dwelling for the mermaids. The mermaid myth animated Strehla to choose the mermaid as a unique selling point for the town Thus, the mermaid gives its name to the open-air swimming pool and there are two mermaid paths on which hikers can discover newly created projects and historical sights. In addition, a "Strehla mermaid" is regularly chosen for the annual mermaid festival.
In 2005, the Strehlaer Stadtmarketingverein e. V. (Strehla City Marketing Association) called for people to design a mermaid as a distinctive mark for the city. A mermaid with a height of 3 meters was selected from all the designs and displayed on the Nixstein.
