The Dresden Arts and Crafts Passages
In the heart of the Inner Neustadt, between the Golden Rider and the Dreikönigskirche, you will find the largest enclosed Baroque ensemble in Saxony. The painter Kügelgen once lived in one of the town houses - today, many small shops and show workshops present themselves in the six passages, which have been faithfully restored with their picturesque inner courtyards and connecting passages, gilded lettering, ornaments and cartouches.
Saxon craftsmanship is reviving here - amidst a fascinating architectural backdrop.
"Arts and crafts" is a comparatively recent neologism that aims to emphasise the creative quality of handicrafts. In contrast to the even more current "designer", an artisan is usually a designer and performer in one person who focuses on the manual production of unique pieces and small series. Classical arts and crafts include, for example, goldsmithing and silversmithing, porcelain painting, sculpture and carpentry, glassblowing or the construction of instruments.
The Dresden Arts and Crafts Passages continue this tradition. Glass art and porcelain painting, blacksmithing, a soap factory and a leather workshop, antiques and galleries reflect a multifaceted picture of time-honoured arts.
Stroll, look, rummage and linger in show workshops and small gastronomic islands - a must for all Dresdeners and visitors to the city, especially in the warm season.
