The Hofkirche is the youngest baroque building in Dresden and with its floor space of almost 4800 square metres it is also the largest church building in Saxony. The crypt of the Catholic Cathedral of St Trinitatis on Schloßplatz contains 49 sarcophagi of the Wettin electors and kings and their relatives. The heart of August the Strong also rests here. The balustrades and niches of the court church are adorned with 78 stone figures. They were created by Lorenzo Mattielli and, at a height of three and a half metres, represent the apostles, saints and princes of the church. The Court Church was built between 1739 and 1755 by the Italian architect Gaetano Chiaveri in the Baroque style. In Protestant Saxony, the church building had to be planned under strict secrecy. Since 1980, the Hofkirche has been the cathedral of the diocese of Dresden-Meissen. The precious furnishings include Permoser's rococo pulpit, the altarpiece by Mengs and a Silbermann organ.
