Seußlitz Castle Church - George-Bähr Church

At a glance

The George-Bähr Church is a baroque gem in the picturesque Elbe wine village of Diesbar-Seußlitz. The enchanting palace garden is freely accessible and invites you to take a walk, as does the adjacent Golk Forest.

The George Bähr Church is a baroque church building by Georg Bähr, the creator of the impressive Dresden Frauenkirche. The oldest porch of the church dates back to 1265, when Margrave of Meissen, Henry the Illustrious, had a country castle built on this site. Only a little later, he donated Seusslitz Castle to the Monastery of the Poor Clares as a monastery, whereupon it was rebuilt again. In 1546, Simon von Pistoris bought the monastery and built a residential castle from it.The reconstruction to the present castle church took place in 1722. Count Heinrich von Bünau acquired the property and commissioned George Bähr to rebuild the castle in the Baroque style. Baroque beauty awaits visitors not only in the church, but also in the enchanting castle garden. This is designed in the French and English horticultural style. The garden is decorated with sculptures by the important Baroque sculptor Balthasar Permoser, representing the seasons or months.

During guided tours of the George-Bähr Church, tourists and other interested people can learn the most important facts about the history of the construction and the furnishings of the church. The tours are possible only by appointment.
