In Dresden alone, 10 very different Christmas markets cast their magic over the city. And then there are the many wonderful Advent and Christmas markets in the Elbland region. What's going on? Experience the 590th Striezelmarkt!

27 November to 24 December 2024

Glittering lights, twinkling stars, shining children's eyes, the smell of mulled wine and gingerbread, Christmas carols. The 590th Dresden Striezelmarkt is Germany's oldest Christmas market! Look forward to strolling around, snacking and finding presents. Wooden art from the Ore Mountains, Lusatian blue print fabrics, Herrnhut stars. Of course, you can't miss a piece of original Dresden Christmas stollen in the light of the giant Erzgebirge pyramid.

Christmas markets in Dresden

Dresden transforms into a city full of festive diversity at Christmas time. From medieval hustle and bustle to romantic Christmas spirit and Nordic flair – everyone will find their favourite market here. And the best thing is: the Advent on Neumarkt and Augustusmarkt Christmas markets extend the festive atmosphere until 5 January 2025. The Rauhnächte im Stallhof with their special charm also invite you to linger until 6 January 2025.

Tip: Stollenmarkt in the QF-Passage

On 17 October, the Christmas stollen market ‘Hello Dresden’ will open in the QF Passage at the Frauenkirche. Here you will find a large selection of original Dresden Christmas stollen from various traditional bakers – tasting is expressly allowed! You will also find original stollen knives and stollen boards at the stollen market, as well as regional mulled wines in many different delicious flavours.

Christmas delicacies

The famous Christmas cake, lovingly baked by hand, is the culinary highlight of the festive season. Tip: the Stollenmarkt at the Frauenkirche awaits you in the QF Passage at Dresden's Neumarkt. At this small, atmospheric market, you can taste and buy the original Dresden Christmas Stollen from selected bakers. You can also gain interesting insights into the traditional production of the Stollen. Decorative Stollen knives, Stollen boards and Dresden mulled wine complete the range.

Sought-after collectibles

The Striezelmarkt mug is a real collector's item every year. The special edition 2024, limited to 590 copies, is handmade and presents a new motif every year. In addition, there is a standard model and a special children's mug for the market bar – all lovingly produced in the region.

You can find the Striezelmarkt cups and other souvenirs at the Dresden Information centre at the Frauenkirche, at the Striezelmarkt and at the main train station, as well as online.

Official means of payment at the Striezelmarkt

The Dresden Striezeltaler is the official currency of the Striezelmarkt. Since 2014, the coin has been issued with a new motif every year. Buy ten talers and get one for free. Striezeltaler from previous years can still be redeemed.

Dresdner Glücksbringer

The ‘Pflaumentoffel’ is the perfect souvenir from Dresden! This traditional figure made of prunes, which once represented chimney sweep boys, not only brings luck, but is also one of the absolute must-haves of the Christmas season. Discover it at the famous Dresden Striezelmarkt or in many souvenir shops in the city!

Stars und Sternchen

The Herrnhut Stars are an essential highlight of Saxony's Christmas culture. These intricately folded stars, originating from the Moravian Church in Herrnhut, bring festive brilliance to homes around the world. Recently, the Herrnhut community has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in Saxony, making the stars an even more special souvenir. They are available in many shops throughout Dresden and at the region’s Christmas markets.
